This week has been a doozy, in both good and bad ways!
Bad: I pulled a muscle in my neck and had to spend three days off work, and I caught a cold (or it could be bad allergies).
Good: I started fostering a cat from the humane society run by my workplace. Her name is Gracie, and she loves to snuggle! (I won't be posting pictures of her publicly since she does not belong to me). I also learned how to do a dental cleaning on a dog and got to draw blood from a cat's leg. Drawing blood is harder than you'd think!
Other random things that happened this week:
When trying to get an X-ray on a 140-pound Great Dane, the Great Dane escaped, knocking over two people and the X-ray monitor, which broke on the ground.
When one of the vets was spaying a recently pregnant cat (her kittens were weaned at this point), one of the cat's mammaries squirted milk directly in another intern's face!
Every animal I worked with yesterday was trying to cause me bodily harm. A Chihuahua, two ginger cats (one of whom beat the crap out of one of the vet techs), a Pug-Boxer mix I was helping get X-rays on, and a black cat who needed a bandage put over a torn-out claw. I'm lucky that I haven't been injured at work so far. It's a "when," not an "if," though. Always make sure to clean any bites or scratches you get from your pets (especially cats), since they can have a lot of nasty bacteria in their claws or mouth that you don't want in you!
I also got to release a baby squirrel that was orphaned who was rehabilitated at Puget Sound WildCare, the wildlife rehabilitation center run by my workplace. In Washington, rehabilitated animals are required to be released within a ten-mile radius of where they were found. This can make releases more difficult, since staff have to drive out of their way. However, it is better for the animal to go back to familiar territory. Luckily for this squirrel, I live on the street where he was found, so I released him on my way home from work. I hope he was able to reunite with family. I'll attach a release video at the end of the post.
Here's to hoping I can get through the next week without getting sick and/or injured!
